Precision Glass Molding Aspheres from RPO

15/10/2009

Rochester Precision Optics offers Precision Glass Molding (PGM) technology for the rapid production of aspheric lenses. With technology developed at Eastman Kodak, the PGM process was adapted to mass-produce aspheric lenses to reduce lead times and lower costs. This highly repeatable process is accomplished by heating and press-forming optical grade glass blanks (preforms) using ultra precision tooling. Vertical integration allows for in-house manufacturing of all tooling, molds, preform fabrication, centering and AR coating. These molded lenses can have spherical, aspherical and biaspherical surfaces. Today, the RPO PGM process offers both catalogue and custom molded glass aspheric lenses in sizes from 1mm to 60mm in diameter.

Recently, RPO have been adding new aspheric collimator lenses to the list of glass molded catalogue optics, with focal lengths ranging from 2mm to 11mm, and numerical apertures (NA) up to 0.60.  All provide diffraction-limited performance, with two designs customised specifically for short wavelength applications (408nm).  Injection mounted assemblies are also offered for select lenses. RPO’s latest catalogue lens, the A-435, is a high NA lens designed for such applications as barcode scanners, medical instruments, small weapons sights and laser pointers.

In addition to glass aspheric lenses, RPO also has the manufacturing capability for infrared lenses made from germanium, silicon and most typical IR materials. They have the ability to work with both traditional grinding / polishing methods, modern diamond turning techniques and moldable IR materials. These lenses can be coated and mounted into custom assemblies, based on your design or work done by RPO’s optical engineers.

Custom diameters, coating requests and special designs are always welcome and, if necessary, Pacer and RPO will work with you to develop a custom lens to meet the requirements of your application. Call us on 0118 984 5280 to discuss your requirements.
